Pacific Beach is a great home base precisely because it’s central. Most of what’s worth seeing in San Diego is a short drive away, which means you don’t have to choose between a beach vacation and an exploring one.
La Jolla is the closest and easiest, about ten minutes north. La Jolla Cove is where you’ll find the sea lions hauled out on the rocks, an easy, free, kid-friendly stop that rarely disappoints. Pair it with a walk along the coastal path and lunch in the village if you want to stretch it into a half day.
Balboa Park is about fifteen minutes south and is worth a full morning on its own. It’s home to the San Diego Zoo, a dozen museums, and enough gardens and courtyards to wear out even the most energetic kids without anyone needing a nap in the car. Go early if the zoo is on the list, lines build fast by midday.
SeaWorld San Diego sits on Mission Bay, close enough that you can catch the evening fireworks from some of our homes without driving anywhere. If you’re going in for the day, arrive at opening and plan around the show schedule rather than wandering in without a plan.
For something quieter, Sunset Cliffs Natural Park in Point Loma is a twenty minute drive and one of the best sunset spots in the city, sandstone bluffs, tide pools, and none of the crowds you’ll find at the more famous lookouts.
The point of staying in Pacific Beach is that none of these trips eat your whole day, you can do one activity and still be back for an evening on the sand. Browse our properties to find a home central enough to make day trips like these easy.
