Birch Aquarium at Scripps

San Diego doesn’t get much rain, but it gets plenty of grey, damp June-gloom mornings, and that’s exactly when we point guests toward Birch Aquarium. Run by Scripps Institution of Oceanography, it sits on a bluff above La Jolla with tanks full of seahorses, drifting jellyfish and a kelp forest, plus outdoor tide pool tanks the kids can actually touch. It’s small enough to cover in two hours without anyone melting down, but detailed enough that older kids and adults get something out of it too. Go right at opening, 9am, and you’ll have the touch pools mostly to yourselves before the tour groups arrive later in the morning. Stroller access is easy throughout and there’s a cafe on site if hunger strikes mid-visit. Buying tickets online ahead of time skips the will-call line, worth doing on weekends. It’s a fifteen to twenty minute drive from our Pacific Beach homes, easy to pair with a walk along the La Jolla coast if the weather clears up by afternoon.
