Cabrillo National Monument

Perched at the tip of the Point Loma Peninsula, Cabrillo National Monument is one of San Diego’s most rewarding half-day trips — and one of the few spots where you can take in both the Pacific Ocean and the city skyline from the same overlook. Guests love the short walk out to the historic Old Point Loma Lighthouse, the tide pools that appear at low tide along the rocky shoreline, and the whale-watching lookout points that come alive during migration season (December through March). It’s an easy, uncrowded outing that feels far more dramatic than the drive suggests. Bring a jacket — it’s breezier up top than it looks from the car. Arrive in the late afternoon for golden-hour views over the harbor, or come early to beat the tour buses and have the tide pools mostly to yourself. Whichever you choose, it’s the kind of stop that turns into everyone’s favorite photo from the trip. A must-see for first-time San Diego visitors staying with us.
