Crystal Pier

Crystal Pier is the one thing every guest should do in the first day or two, and it costs nothing. Walk straight out from the foot of Garnet Avenue and you’re over open water within a few minutes, with surfers peeling off waves on either side and a string of guest cottages built right onto the pier itself, one of the few places left on the West Coast where you can sleep above the surf. It’s flat, stroller-friendly, and short enough that toddlers can do the whole thing without a meltdown, but long enough to feel like an actual outing. Early morning is best, the light is soft, the pier is quiet, and you’ll often catch dolphins working the swell just beyond the surf line. Evenings work too, especially near sunset when the whole pier turns gold and the fishing regulars start reeling things in for the day. It’s a five to ten minute walk from most of our homes, no car required, and it’s the fastest way to get oriented in Pacific Beach on your first afternoon.
