Sunset Cliffs Natural Park

As the name promises, Sunset Cliffs is the spot to catch the best sunset in San Diego — a rugged stretch of eroded sandstone bluffs overlooking the open Pacific, with a few pockets of beach access down carved-out trails near the first parking lot. It’s less about swimming and more about the view: locals gather along the cliff edges most evenings just to watch the sun drop into the ocean, and on a clear night the colors are hard to beat. The uneven, crumbling cliff edges mean it’s worth being careful with kids and staying back from the unmarked drop-offs, especially in low light. Arrive 30-45 minutes before sunset to find parking and a good spot along the cliffs. It pairs naturally with dinner nearby afterward, making for an easy, low-key evening out.
