Torrey Pines State Reserve

Widely regarded as the best hike in San Diego, Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is a dramatic stretch of sandstone cliffs, badlands-style trails, and rare Torrey pines found almost nowhere else on Earth. The trails are short — most loops take 30 to 90 minutes — but the payoff is huge: sweeping Pacific views the entire way, and a beach at the bottom for cooling off afterward. It’s moderately strenuous in spots with some sandy, uneven footing, so proper shoes make a real difference. Go early in the day, both to beat the crowds (parking fills fast, especially on weekends) and to catch the coastline in softer morning light. This is the outing we recommend most often to guests who want one truly iconic San Diego photo and a bit of a workout to earn it. Pair it with a stop in La Jolla or Del Mar afterward for a full coastal day.
