Best Things to Do in Pacific Beach, San Diego With Kids

Kids playing on the sand at a Southern California beach

Pacific Beach is one of those rare San Diego neighborhoods where “family-friendly” isn’t a marketing line, it’s just how the place works. We’ve raised our own two kids here, so when guests ask what to actually do with children in tow, this is the list we give them.

Start with the obvious: the beach itself. Law Street family beach is a short walk from most of our homes and stays calmer than the stretch near Garnet Avenue, with a gentle shore break that’s forgiving for smaller swimmers. Bring the boogie boards, we leave a set in every home, and plan to be there by mid-morning before the wind picks up in the afternoon.

For a change of scenery, Belmont Park in nearby Mission Beach has the Giant Dipper wooden roller coaster plus a carousel and mini golf, easy to fill two or three hours without much planning. Crystal Pier is free and flat enough for a stroller, and it’s the best five-minute activity in the neighborhood, walk out over the water and watch the surfers below.

If you need an air-conditioned break from the sun, Birch Aquarium at Scripps in La Jolla is a fifteen minute drive and has touch pools the kids can actually get their hands into. And if the marine layer rolls in, as it does most June mornings, that’s your cue to head there instead of fighting the grey beach light.

Food-wise, keep it simple. Breakfast Republic and The Baked Bear are both walkable and built for sandy feet and impatient appetites. Nobody needs a reservation to enjoy Pacific Beach with kids, just sunscreen, a plan for nap time, and a general willingness to let the day be slower than usual.

This is the kind of trip where the itinerary matters less than the base you’re working from. Browse our properties to find a home close enough to the sand that “getting to the beach” isn’t its own event.
